POLITIK IDENTITAS KOMUNITAS HOMOSEKSUAL DALAM FILM “MILK”
Abstract: This study analyzes
the politics of identity of homosexual community, represented by Harvey Milk’s
character in “Milk” movie. Harvey Milk was recorded in history as the first
homosexual public officer in the USA. Milk, produced by Focus Features, Axon Films,
tells about resistence of homosexual community against the conservative group
dominated by heterosexual in San Fransisco, USA. This movie had won numerous
awards including best actor Sean Penn, who won Academy Award in 2009. The aim
of this study is to analyze how representation of politics of identity and
cultural reality of homosexual community through signs and meanings showed in
this movie. The method of study is Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis, consists
of both making arrangement and the Myth’s concept he developed. This study
shows that politics of identity in this movie is used by homosexual community
to get a recognition and equality in society. Forms of politics of identity are
showed through Harvey Milk’s efforts for coming out and improving the homosexual’s
images in order to be better. Beside that, the emergence of community
resistence, the fulfillment of direct representation right and the political
alliance formation against the domination of heterosexual majority community,
became social movements which heve been done by homosexual community for
getting justice after facing the pressures and repression for a long time.
