PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC: THE ART OF CONDUCTING ON GADJAH MADA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Abstract: This study was intended to understand the role of conductor on Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra in terms of the psychological. The research was conducted in a qualitative approach through a phenomenological method. Sources of data consist of experienced of researchers on conducting Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra in the last two years. Subject were varying from 7 violinist I, 8 violinist II, 3 violist, 5 cellist, 2 contrabassist, 3 fluitist, 1 clarinetist, 3 alto saxophonist, 1 trumpeter, 4 accoustic guitarist, 2 electric guitarist, 2 drummer, 2 electric bassist, and 24 choirs. The rehearsal of the orchestra consist in three types: individual rehearsal, sectional rehearsals, and full orchestra rehearsals. During rehearsals, the conductor more interaction with verbal communication. During the concerts, the conductor pure communicated with non-verbal behavior. The conductor of Gadjah Mada Chamber Orchestra usedthe democratic leadership to conducted the orchestra. There was a relationship between conductor instruction, player perception, and the energy to the audiences.
