Abstract: This Public
Serviceis a continuation of an action research on the implementation of
realisticmathematics instructiontitled "Efforts To ImproveStudent
Activeness and Achievementin the Topic of Fractionsthrough Realistic
Mathematics Approachin Primary School, GradeV,Muhammadiyah Ambarketawang 3,
Gamping" in 2009. As the action research mentioned resulted in
increasedactiveness and achievement significantly, this public training service
activity has the purpose of increasing the understanding of the fractions
operations concept with in primary school teachers of the working group II, in
Ambarketawang, district of Gamping, D.I.Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia.
The training activity applied a method that consists ofexplanatory
presentation on the realistic approach tomathematics, demonstration of problem-
solving examples relatedto operations offractions, giving practical assignment
stoparticipants to settle different problems realistically, as well
ascatechizing session.The activities made use of many localenvironment-based
learning media that in doing operations with fractions, namely sweet-cake,
pudding, banana leaf, colored-paper and transparent plastic.
Results reached by the end of training and discussion activities give a
strong impression about the great potential of realistic mathematics
instruction to improve the understanding of the concept of fractions operation
within the mentioned working group. Evaluation results show that 100% of
participantshave scores above70,with the average of 86.
