EKOBIOLOGI KERANG MUTIARA AIR TAWAR (Anodonta woodiana, Lea)

ABSTRACT: Freshwater pearl mussel commonly resulted from Hyriopsis Schlegeli, H. cumingii, Margaritifera margaritifera and Anodonta implicata. Freshwater mussel Anodonta woodiana, Lea. has similar morphology with Hyriopsis sp. So that it can be used to produce pearl. The purpose of this research was to know: (1) Biology, ecology and physiology aspects of pearl mussel Anodonta woodiana, Lea. (2) Growth and reproduction of the pearl mussel. This research was conducted at Fish Health Laboratory, BBPBAT Sukabumi for 3 months from Desember 2008 until Pebruary 2009, with some methods as follows: specimen treatment dry method and microscopic and qualitative observation of the mussel’s growth and reproduction.Pearl mussel as freshwater mollusc have many important economy potencies. Pearl mussel have specific characters as like parasitism at glochidia larvae phase. This animal also have important reproduction ability related with metabolism and bioenergetic. Therefore, it needs a sustainable use management.
