Stress and its correlation of the menstrual cycle in midwifery students
ABSTRACT: Menstrual events
experienced by women is a natural event, usually startingfrom the age of 11-12
years, depending on the nutritional status and psychologicaldevelopment of
adolescent girls. However, menstruation sometimes causes uncomfortable conditions
and disrupts their activity. The purpose of this study to determine the relationship
of stress levels with the menstrual cycle in female students.
Methods:The research used cross sectional design with research population
are all students of Diploma IV midwife educator in STIKes Bina Permata Medika
Tangerang 2015. The sample used is 42 people divided into two groups, 21
respondents with normal menstrualcycle and 21 respondents with abnormal
menstrual cycle . Sampling technique usingaccidental sampling technique.
Instruments used to assess stress levels using Depression Anxiety Stress Scales
(DASS). Statistic test using Spearman test.
Results:The results showed that from 42 respondents, there were 50% with
normal stress level, mild stress level 21,4%, and medium stress level 28,6%.
More respondents withirregular menstrual cycles who experienced moderate stress
(83.3%) and mild (66.7%)compared to non-stress (23.8%). Spearman test showed
there was a significant correlationwith the positive direction between stress
level with student's menstrual cycle (r=0,53 p=0,000).
ConclusionsStress experienced by students need to be the attention of
education managers,by providing various methods and interesting learning media,
as well as conduciveacademic conditions for the learning process can run
smoothly and student achievement can be improved.
