PELAKSANAAN PENGAJARAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN SEJARAH DI SEKOLAH-SEKOLAH DI MALAYSIA, 1957 - 1989
Abstract: History was first
called ‘Tawarikh’ from 1918 until 1978. It has since been known simply as
‘history’. In Malaysia, history was recognized as a subject from 1957 and
became one of the core subjects in 1989.
Under the Secondary School Integrated Curriculum/Kurikulum Bersepadu
Sekolah Menengah (KBSM),history is taught from Form 1 classes right up to Form
5 in all secondary schools in Malaysia. This articlefocuses on the
implementation of the teaching and learning of history in Malaysian schools
from 1957 to1989, a period which witnessed numerous changes and developments
involving the subject. Itsimplementation in Malaysian schools involved various
policy aspects, syllabus changes, teaching and learning methods, challenges,
and steps in upholding history as a subject in schools. The article also takesinto
account the strategies for handling the difficulties faced in the
implementation of history teaching; to find the best approach in strengthening
history as a subject and to further inculcate the spirit of unity and loyalty
towards the country.
