PENGARUH VISKOSITAS OLI SEBAGAI CAIRAN PENDINGIN TERHADAP SIFAT MEKANIS PADA PROSES QUENCHING BAJA ST 60
ABSTRACT: Quenching is one of
the heat treatment process that are quite important and widely applied in
manufacturing processes in the metal industry . Quenching can improve the
mechanical properties of the steel , but on the other hand will cause internal
stress that changes in the shape and size so that it can lead to the presence
of cracks. Important factors that influence in the quenching process are, the
design of the equipment , type of coolant media, coolant concentration, bath
temperature, and movement of cooling
rate. This study aims to determine the effect of oil viscosity on the
mechanical properties of the material as indicated by the hardness test and
tensile test on medium carbon steel St 60 that has undergone a process of
quenching . Quenching process consists of heating and rapid cooling. Heating
process using a blander, while the cooling process using a liquid oil with
different levels of viscosity and cooling with water media as a comparison.
Research shows that the difference in the viscosity of the oil in the quenching
process can affect the value of the test material hardness. The lower the oil
viscosity, hardness value tends to increase the quenching results. Quenching
process can increase the tensile strength and yield stress test of the material. Quenching process resulting
material becomes brittle fracture characterized by the results during the
testing process showed brittle fracture. Quenching process changes material
becomes brittle, its characterized by the results during the testing process
showed brittle fracture, this is due to changes in the microstructure of
ferrite and pearlite structure becomes martensite structure that hard and
brittle.
