STUDY OF DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY OF THREE DIMENSIONAL PRINTING (3DP™) THERMO JET
ABSTRACT: Rapid Tooling (RT)
application is one of the ultimate goals of Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques,
which many researchers have been investigating and developing in recent times.
However, RP techniques are far from meeting the requirement for high part qualities,
which are necessary for producing the tool. Fortunately, the development of new
material and results from researches, have led to the successful application of
RP technique as RT. Amongst other RP techniques, Stereo lithography (SLA)
technique has shown the best performance in term producing tool directly from
RP machine. However, the build time and investment cost are weakness of SLA.
Therefore, by using 3DP technique, the weakness relating to build time could be
overcome. Unfortunately, the information about part qualities of this technique
has not been publishing widely yet. This present investigation is intended to
provide more information about 3DP technique especially as it relates to part
qualities (i.e. dimensional accuracy such as roundness, diameter accuracy, straightness,
flatness and sphericity) by considering part orientation. The results shows
that dimensional accuracy of 3DP technique in some features like small part
diameter of stepped boss, and straightness are slightly good comparing to
