PENGARUH TEKANAN VACUUM TERHADAP KEKUATAN TARIK DAN KEKUATAN LENTUR PADA BIOKOMPOSIT SERAT PURUN TIKUS (ELEOCHARIS DULCIS)

Abstract: Composite material made from polymer biocomposite material is becoming an alternative of the metal and is widely applied in the manufacturing industry. It is due to their corrosion resistanceand high strength ratio of specific gravity. Natural fiber is used for a reinforcement in compositesinstead of synthetic fiber such as glass fiber because of its environmental friendly and widely available in nature. Meanwhile, the application of the natural fiber needs to be optimized. Themethod used to produce the composite is by isolating and vacuuming mold composite specimens (biocomposites) in a container (the media). It is used to reduce the pressure around, so thecomposite (biocomposite) is not directly contacted with the air. Then, the void in composite thatcan decrease the strength of the composite will not be formed. The matrix used in this study is157 BTQN Polyester by using MEKPO with concentration of 1% as catalyst. The vacuum pressure used in this study are 6 cmHg, 26 cmHg, 46 cmHg and 76 cmHg (1 atm). This study includes ofthree steps, firstly, the spesimen tested by using tensile and flexure testing, secondly, evaluatedby using SEM, and thirdly, fracture observed by using macro photos. The results shown that there are significant effect of vacuum pressure level to the biocomposite tensile strength and flexuralstrength. Specimens with angular orientation 0/90/0/90 shows that the tensile strength of 54.7 MPa and bending strength of 243 MPa.
